HART Adoption Process

1. Adoption Application

If you're thinking about adopting a cat or kitten from HART, even if you're unsure which lucky feline you would like to bring home, please complete either our cat or kitten applications, and review our Adoption Policies. HART requires all resident pets to be up-to-date on their vaccinations. Applications will be rejected if pets are not vaccinated. Please check with your veterinarian to ensure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccines. HART will call your veterinarian to confirm vaccination status. Having a completed application on file with HART is required prior to meeting our cats.

Our Adoption Team will contact you within 7 days to let you know if your application has been approved.

KITTENS (in our kitten foster homes)
As soon as kittens are surrendered to HART, they are placed in local foster homes. They stay in these homes until the day they are adopted. We believe the home environment is the best place for the health and socialization of our kittens. Kittens 6 months of age and younger are to be paired up at adoption when there are no cats in the household that are 6 years old or younger. Read more about our Adoption Policies.

Once your adoption application is approved, our Kitten Team will be in touch to let you know when kittens are available for adoption and set up a time for you to meet them.

To contact our kitten adoption team directly, email us at kitten.team@hartofme.org.

3. After Adopting

Many veterinary offices offer a free or reduced-cost post-adoption visit for animals adopted from local shelters. Please contact your veterinarian for specifics.

Read our guide about taking care of your new HART cat.

We want every adoption to be for life, but sometimes situations change. Whether the adoption happened days, weeks, or years ago, and you can no longer keep your HART cat, we require the cat or kitten to be returned to us and not sold or re-homed.

Please reach out to us directly at 207-829-4116 if you need to return a cat or kitten adopted from HART.
